Ruhr University Bochum

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of the 10 largest universities in Germany. The research-rich university with many disciplines includes 20 faculties in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, natural sciences and medicine.

Foundation

The RUB is located in Bochum and was opened in 1965. Currently, the university teaches 43,000 students and employs 5,655 people.

Worth knowing

One of the Ruhr University’s many research areas is plasma technology. Here, the use of how plasma can be used to coat surfaces is particularly being investigated.

Prof. Dr. Peter Awakowicz, Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, heads the Chair of AEPT. The subfield of AEPT, “General Electrical Engineering and Plasma Technology”, is particularly concerned with plasma technology in the area of specialization and research.

Research groups at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, RWTH Aachen and University of Paderborn are working on the fundamentals of High Power Pulsed Magnetron Sputtering (HPPMS) of oxides and nitrides and the synthesis of barrier protection layers on polymers.
