Objective of the promotion:

  • Research and development of innovative technologies for improved medical diagnostics and therapy
  • Perspective technical improvement can refer to the following criteria, for example: higher specificity and/or selectivity, faster analysis time and thus diagnostics […].
  • Within Module A, new combinations of a photonic or quantum-based process with other processes (also non-photonic/quantum-based possible) are to be researched + developed
  • Module B is intended to open up potential applications in medical diagnostics and therapy by supporting research activities on the fundamentals of new quantum-based or photonic processes – the project is completed as soon as functional capability is demonstrated with a laboratory test setup

Subject of the funding programme

  • Innovative photonic and quantum-based technologies and processes with application prospects in medicine and medical biotechnology are funded

Module A:

  • The joint projects focus on photonic and quantum-based approaches, as well as the combination of several methods and their evaluation, so that there is a realistic prospect of commercialization after the end of the project
  • The aim is to carry out research work that demonstrates a holistic system structure as a solution approach.
  • Characteristic is a defined application perspective from the fields of medicine or medical biotechnology
  • The added value of the desired quantum technology and/or photonic solution must be worked out
  • As a rule, joint projects should be coordinated by an industry partner
  • In order to secure supply chains and ensure the broad impact of the funding measures, the aim is to involve SMEs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the collaborative projects

Module B

  • In particular, research into quantum-based effects as well as new photonic methods for new, fundamental application perspectives in medicine or medical biotechnology will be addressed
  • In addition to application perspectives in medicine or medical biotechnologies, the advantages that arise for these application perspectives due to investigated quantum-based or photonic technologies must be presented
  • At least one active industrial partner must actively participate in the joint project with its own sub-project

Period of validity

The funding guideline comes into force on the day of its publication in the Federal Gazette. The term of this funding guideline is limited until the date of expiry of the GBER, plus an adjustment period of six months, until December 31, 2028. An extension beyond December 31, 2035 is not possible.
