Guideline as part of the High-Tech Agenda Germany for funding projects on the topic of disruptive approaches for the next generation of medical sensor technology

Aim of the promotion

  • Research, development and testing of potentially disruptive and innovative sensor technology for medical technology with high market and supply relevance and standard-compliant quality standards
  • Approaches for measuring clinically relevant biomarkers on or in the human body
  • Existing procedures in medical diagnostics, therapy or aftercare demonstrably improved or new applications further developed
  • At the end of the funding period, disruptive innovations for sensors of sensor systems with a medical use case, high demand and a convincing marketing management strategy are available

Object of the funding

  • Pre-competitive, application-oriented individual and joint projects as well as an accompanying project are funded

Module 1: Application-oriented individual and joint projects

  • Research and development expenses for innovative sensor technology for measuring clinically relevant biomarkers on or in the human body
  • Projects must demonstrate a clear level of innovation and high scientific and technical risk – can also be realized without funding
  • Address clearly defined high medical use case
  • Research questions are based on scientifically and technically sound hypotheses
  • Eligible projects that aim to achieve significant improvements in medical sensors or sensor systems
  • Research and development of resource-saving and high-energy systems for multimodal recording of physiological and biochemical markers are also supported
  • Technologies from other research areas can be transferred

Module 2: Accompanying project

  • The focus of the accompanying project is on utilizing the network potential, creating synergies between projects to deal with overarching, content-related, legal and regulatory issues
  • Accompanying project to ensure networking and support for the projects – through annual status conferences in coordination with BMFTR (…)
  • Implementation of practice checks, e.g. for MDR or the IVDR
  • Establishment of an advisory group consisting of experts

Period of validity:

The funding guideline enters into force on the day of its publication in the Federal Gazette. The term of this funding guideline is until the date of expiry of the GBER, plus an adjustment period of six months, until June 30, 2027 for a limited period. An extension is not possible via the December 31, 2032 possible.
